A demo reel is the single most effective tool for getting auditions. Headshots get you considered; your reel gets you called in.
Length
60 to 90 seconds. Casting directors watch 15-20 seconds before deciding to continue. Your best work must be first.
What to Include
Lead with your absolute strongest scene. Show two to four clips demonstrating range. Prioritize picture and sound quality over impressive credits.
What to Leave Out
- Title cards between clips
- Opening montages or music beds
- Background/extra work
- Theater footage (unless professionally shot)
- Scenes where you are not the focus
Creating Footage
Reel scene services ($200-1,500/scene) produce original, professional footage. Self-produced content with good lighting and a capable scene partner works too. Student films are free and the best ones look professional.
Editing
Clean cuts, matched audio levels, trim ruthlessly. End with a slate showing your name and profile link. Hire a reel editor ($100-500) if possible.
Distribution
Upload to YouTube and Vimeo. Add to casting platforms. Embed on your ActorRankings profile alongside headshots and credits. Make sure your agent has the latest version.
Update whenever you get footage better than your weakest current clip. Your reel is a living document.
