Actor Headshot Tips: What Casting Directors Actually Want to See

Your headshot is your calling card. Learn what casting directors look for, common mistakes to avoid, and how to get the most out of your session.

A great headshot does one thing: it makes a casting director want to bring you in. It does not need to be artsy or dramatic. It needs to look like you on your best day.

The Current Standard

Digital, full color, head and shoulders framing. Simple background. Natural lighting. Engaged eyes with an expression that suggests a character, not a pose.

The "Looks Like You" Rule

The most common complaint from casting directors: actors who look nothing like their headshots. Current hair, minimal retouching, natural expression. When you walk through the door, they should recognize you instantly.

How Many Looks

Minimum two: commercial (warm, approachable, bright) and theatrical (serious, grounded, dramatic). If you play distinctly different types, add a third.

Choosing a Photographer

Specialize in actors (not weddings or portraits). Check their portfolio for variety and personality. Ask working actors for referrals. Budget $400-1,200 in major markets.

Session Prep

Bring 3-5 outfits in solid colors. Get your haircut a week before. Sleep well. Hydrate. Warm up physically before the session.

Selecting Finals

Pick the shot where you look most interesting and most like yourself, not the most attractive. Get feedback from actors and agents, not family.

Make sure your headshots are on every platform: casting sites, your agent's system, and your ActorRankings profile. Consistency across platforms builds recognition.
