The decision to join SAG-AFTRA is one of the most consequential choices in an acting career. Join too early and you cut off non-union work. Wait too long and you miss union protections.
How to Become Eligible
- Hired on a union project: A principal role on a SAG-AFTRA production makes you eligible
- Affiliated union member: AEA or other union membership for 1+ year with work under that jurisdiction
- Taft-Hartley: When a union production casts a non-union actor and files a report
The Cost
Initiation fee: $3,000. Annual dues: minimum ~$230/year, scaled by earnings.
Benefits
Minimum pay rates (significantly higher), residuals, health insurance (above ~$26,000 in earnings), pension contributions, regulated working conditions, and dispute protection.
When to Join
When you are booking consistently, have been offered a union role, live in a major market where most work is union, and can afford the initiation fee without financial distress.
Fi-Core
Financial Core allows working both union and non-union but with significant trade-offs: no voting rights, no meeting attendance, and potential professional stigma. It is your legal right but a controversial choice.
Make sure your union status is accurate on your resume and ActorRankings profile. Casting directors filter by union status.
